Bennison, 1991 ****************************** ARTICLE ********************************* The Family of Capt. Peter Loop of Hillsdale, New York Victor L. Bennison [A draft of a chapter from "The Early Loop Family in America", in preparation, (c) 1991] Peter LOOP [Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)] of Hillsdale, Columbia County, New York, was born in Langenbach, in the Parish of Marienberg, on December 12, 1732, and was christened soon thereafter on the fourth day of Advent in the same year. He was the son of Christian LOOP and Anna Maria FILGER (or PHILYER). He arrived in New York City with his parents about October 1737. He married three times, but had children only by his first two wives. His first wife, by whom he had seven children, was Cousia SPRINGER. She died between 1769 and 1776. His second, by whom he had four children, was Maria BAILEY. She died after 1783. We know nothing more about his first two wives. There is, however, one intriguing record in Trinity Church, New York. Baptized on November 2, 1755, is Maria Bayly, daughter of William Bayly and Deborah Springer. This Maria Bayly would have been 21 when Peter had his first child by his second wife Maria Bailey. Could Peter have married his first wife's niece? His third wife was christened Prudence MOORHOUSE on January 21, 1738 in Saybrook, Connecticut, daughter of Thomas MOORHOUSE and Prudence WRIGHT. She married first Jesse BUSHNELL. She died on October 27, 1828 and is buried beside her husband, Peter LOOP. Peter LOOP's tombstone calls him "Capt. Peter Loop" and claims he was 101 years old in 1824, when he died, placing his birth in 1723. This information is quite simply incorrect. 1723 and 1732 have clearly become confused by someone. As for his military rank, Peter LOOP served in the militia with his brother John in 1767 in Capt. John Hogeboom's Co. In 1770, he is listed as a 1st Lieutenant in Van Rensselaer's Regiment, his residence given as Claverack. It is not clear whether Peter LOOP also served in the American Revolution. He is traditionally identified with the Peter LOOP who was made a Lieutenant in Willet's Regiment in 1782. But the year before, in 1781, Peter LOOP, Jr., is listed as a Lieutenant in the same regiment. And Peter LOOP's son Peter, Jr., was most likely an officer during the Revolution, as after the war he is listed as Capt. Peter Loop, Jr., in the Susquehanna Company Papers. So the father and son may have become confused in family tradition. But it is likely Peter deserved the appelation "Capt." if only for his pre-Revolutionary service. It is not clear exactly what is the birth order of Peter LOOP's children. We believe that the order in which they are listed in his will is probably very close, and it does correspond well with known birthdates. The only real difficultly is with the placement of Mary LOOP, as will be discussed. Henry LOOP is mentioned out of order because he is the executor of his father's will. The will mentions all his children who are then (1816) living or who had children then living. John is not mentioned at all, which leads us to believe that he did not survive and did not have surviving children. The will was registered October 27, 1824. Here are the bequests: Wife Prudence: Whatever she needs while she lives with son Henry LOOP, or $250 if she stops living with him. Children of deceased son Christian LOOP: $100 "to be equally divided among them" Son Peter LOOP, Jr.: $1.50 Son Martin LOOP: $1.50 Son David LOOP: $1.50 Daughter Jenny: $1.50 Children of daughter Mary VAN DEUSEN: $50 "to be equally divided among them as they shall severally arrive to the age of twenty one years" with interest. Son Nathaniel LOOP: $1.50 Son Philyer LOOP: $1.50 Son Benjamin LOOP: $1.50 Son Henry LOOP: The residue of the estate. All legacies to be distributed to each legatee either 3 months after Peter's death or as they severally reach 21 years of age. Executors: son Henry LOOP, wife Prudence and friend James Bryan Capt. Peter LOOP and his third wife are buried in the churchyard of the North Hillsdale Methodist Church. Their epitaphs: In In Memory of Memory of Capt Peter Loop M. Benjamin LOOP, b. February 28, 1783, m. Agnes KENNEDY, d. January 19, 1865 Christian LOOP [Peter(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)], the first child of Peter LOOP and Cousia SPRINGER was Christian LOOP, named after Peter's father. He was born on April 16, 1759 in Hillsdale, Columbia County, New York. He married, about 1781, Lucy FERRIS. She was born December 26, 1760. Along with his brother Peter, Jr., he removed with his family to Elmira, NY, then called Newtown, sometime between 1781 and 1790. He is listed as living on Sullivan Street in 1790, and as constable of the nearby town of Chemung in 1791. He died probably in 1799, as his last child was born in April of that year, and Lucy is censused alone in Chemung in 1800. She married October 25, 1801, to William JENNINGS by whom she had two sons: Hector JENNINGS and Jesse JENNINGS. She died before 1816. The children of Christian LOOP and Lucy FERRIS were: 1. Peter C. LOOP, b. July 24, 1781, in Hillsdale, Columbia County, NY, and christened there September 9, 1781. He married Peggy HUEY. She is listed in an indenture as the "true heir" of Abraham HUEY, possibly her father. Peter C. LOOP was a surveyor. They lived in Dauphin county in 1800 where they are censused with one child under ten years old. He is listed as being of Painted Post, Steuben County, New York, in 1814, but Peggy LOOP is listed as being of Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, again in 1820. + 2. William Ferris LOOP, b. July 5, 1783, in Tioga County, NY, m. Jemima STOWELL. He d. in 1830, in Bainbridge, Chenango County, NY. 3. Mary LOOP, b. about 1785 in Elmira, Chemung County, NY. 3. Ruth McLAUGHLIN. + 8. Christian LOOP, b. April 11, 1799, m. Hannah SHAPPEE. They had at least one daughter Mary LOOP who died as an infant near September 17, 1828, in Elmira, Chemung County, NY. Peter LOOP, Jr., [Peter(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)], the second child of Peter LOOP and Cousia SPRINGER was Peter LOOP, Jr. His date of birth or christening is unknown. It is erroneously listed in several sources as May 19, 1755, in Germantown, NY, but this is the date and place of christening of Peter COOPER son of Martin COOPER and Elizabeth LOOP. The Germantown records contain no christening record for Peter LOOP, Jr. Peter LOOP, Jr., probably served in the American Revolution, though it isn't, at this time, possible to determine which military records go with which of the three or four eligible Peter LOOP's in New York during the war. There is a Peter LOOP, Jr., enlisting as a private in Blatner's Company of Van den Burgh's Regiment in Albany County in 1778. There is a Peter LOOP, Jr., in Willet's Levies enlisting 1782 and appointed the same day as a Lieutenant. This is always assumed to have been the father Peter, not the son Peter, Jr., but why was he listed then as Peter LOOP, Jr.? There is also a Peter Loop, Jr., listed as an enlisted man in the 5th Regiment in Dutchess County, NY. Whether Peter LOOP, Jr., served in that war or not, after the war he served as a commisioner in the Susquehanna Company, and in that capacity was referred to as Capt. Peter LOOP, Jr. Around 1792 he married Sarah BIRNEY, daughter of Henry BIRNEY and Rachel SHEARS, possibly in Standing Stone, Wyoming County, New York. She was born about 1772. He died in Bath, Steuben County, New York, in January, 1825. Within a few years of his death most of the rest of the family, along with his widow, removed to Belvidere in Boone County, Illinois. She died there September 24, probably 1846. The children of Peter LOOP, Jr., and Sarah BIRNEY were: + 1. Peter P. LOOP, b. December 8, 1796, in Elmira, Chemung County, NY, m. February 8, 1820, Eliza Irene ROSS. He d. November 3, 1854, in Belvidere, Boone County, IL. 2. John LOOP, was a involved in lumber and merchantile business in Addison, Steuben County, NY, in 1833, when he disappeared on a local business trip and was never seen again. There is a John LOOP, born in NY, aged 58, in the 1850 census of Bowie County, TX, who could conceivably be him. 3. Hannah LOOP, b. 1798, in Elmira, Chemung County, NY, m. 1819, John Knapp TOWNER from Avoca. She d. December 14, 1887, in Belvidere, Boone County, IL. + 4. Henry LOOP, b. May 11, 1799, in Elmira, Chemung County, NY, m. October 15, 1823, Minerva CALKINS in Cohocton, Steuben County, NY. He d. May 27, 1877, in Belvidere, Boone County, NY. 5. Rebecca LOOP (a twin?), b. about 1801. She went with her sister Hannah to IL. She taught school 1836 to 1837 in Kishwaukee River, Boone County, IL. She m. June 19, 1844, Philo CURTIS. + 6. Murray LOOP (a twin?), m. Mary Ann ARNOT in Elmira, Chemung County, NY. He d. in 1848, possibly of wounds received at the Battle of Mexico City. 7. Rachel LOOP. 8. Zerniah LOOP. + 9. Joseph Miller LOOP (a twin?) b. 1811, in Elmira, Chemung County, NY, m. Jane M. GARDNER. He probably d. in Port Sanilac, Sanilac County, MI. 10. Sarah M. LOOP (a twin?) b. 1811, in Steuben County, NY [?], m. December 28, 1834, Avery Smith LEE in Avoca. + 11. James L. LOOP, b. May 1815, in Bath, Steuben County, NY, m. August 6, 1835, Permelia STEVENS in Almond, Allegany County, NY. He d. February 8, 1865, in Rockford, Winnebago County, IL, but is buried in Belvidere, Boone County, IL. Mary LOOP [Peter(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)], was probably the third child of Peter LOOP and Cousia SPRINGER, though she is listed sixth in order in her father's will, which would place her birth after 1771. She is called Mary VAN DEUSEN in the will. There are christenings listed in Copake, 1784 and 1786, for children of Henry VAN DEUSEN and Mary LOOP, one having Peter LOOP as sponsor. This has caused people to place her birth as about 1763, but this is only speculation. She apparently died before 1816 leaving children who had not yet reached the age of 21 by 1816. In fact, one is tempted to infer from the will that none of her surviving children was 21 in 1816, but that would require an overly literal interpretation of the wording in the will. Martin LOOP [Peter(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)], the fourth child of Peter LOOP and Cousia SPRINGER, was christened in Claverack, January 26, 1766. He married Catherine VAN DEUSEN, prior to 1783, the year their first child was born. They had five children. Sometime prior to 1790 they removed to Chenango County and settled in Oxford Township in a part that later became Guilford. There he was murdered by a neighbor, according to Omer Loop's records, and we do know he had died before the 1820 census, in which the rest of his family is listed without him. Nothing further is known about his widow. The children of Martin LOOP and Catherine VAN DEUSEN were: 1. Susanna LOOP, b. September 28, 1783, and christened January 18, 1784, in Copake, Columbia County, NY. She d. young. 2. Martin LOOP, b. about 1786 in Columbia County, NY. He is censused in Mina, Chautauqua County, NY, in 1835, with a wife, one son and one daughter. He is possibly the Martin LOOP censused in Vermilion County, IL, in 1840 and 1850. If so, his wife's name was Sarah. + 3. Peter LOOP, b. about 1795 in NY, m. June 17, 1817, Sena SPENCER, at Masonville, Delaware County, NY. He d. in 1855 in Northeast, Erie County, PA. + 4. Charles LOOP, b. about 1800 in NY, m. (1) 1819, Sarah SEELEY, m. (2) Elizabeth (Betsey) whose surname we do not know. 5. Eunice Ann LOOP, m. William Avery FRY. We do not have strong evidence that this Eunice Ann was Martin's daughter. However, after Martin's death about 1820, his son Charles LOOP is censused with a female the right age to be a sister and William Fry lived in Crawford County, PA, where Charles LOOP lived. William A. FRY was b. in CT. He was a tanner and currier. They lived in Crawford County, PA in 1830. About 1833 they moved to Sheridan County, MO, for a couple of years and thence to Hancock County, IL. In 1846 they moved to Scott County, IA. He d. there in 1848. David LOOP [Peter(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)], the fifth child of Peter LOOP and Cousia SPRINGER, was christened April 24, 1768 in Claverack. He married a woman named Annie D., maiden name unknown. She was born about 1777. David and Annie D. LOOP apparently continued to reside in Columbia County, and both died there, he on October 29, 1841, she on September 17, 1853. They are buried together in North Hillsdale, Columbia County, New York. The children of David LOOP and his wife Annie D. were: 1. Peter D. LOOP, b. about 1796, m. Polly EGGLESTON. He d. December 27, 1858, and is buried in North Hillsdale, Columbia County, NY. He was a miller. No descendents are mentioned in his will dated November 20, 1858 which listed the residences of his living siblings. At the time of the probate, his widow was living in Penn Yan, Yates County, NY. 2. Havillah LOOP, b. about 1800, m. Frances M. whose surname is unknown. She was b. in MA. He d. before 1858, his last residence being Buffalo, NY, in 1858. They had one child: a. Ellen Elizabeth LOOP, b. about 1840 in NY. 3. Mary Ann LOOP, m. John W. HOLLENBECK. She was a resident of Alford, MA, in 1858. 4. Charlotte A. LOOP, b. about 1806. She resided in Nassau, NY, in 1858. She d. March 21, 1888, and is buried in North Hillsdale, Columbia County, NY. 5. Sarah (Sally) Jane LOOP, about 1808, m. Nehemiah SHUTTS. He was b. in 1806 and d. 1901. She d. May 4, 1890. Both are buried in North Hillsdale, Columbia County, NY. 6. Francis LOOP, b. about 1808. He resided in Troy, NY, in 1858. 7. Philyer LOOP, b. about 1810 (1826?), m. Fanny M. whose surname is unknown. He resided in Stockport, NY, in 1858. + 8. David LOOP, b. about 1810 or 1812, in Dover (?), Columbia County, NY, m. Mary WINTER. He d. 1880 probably in Randolph, Cattaraugus County, NY. 9. Henry LOOP, b. about 1815. He resided in California in 1858. John LOOP [Peter(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)], the sixth child of Peter LOOP and Cousia Springer was christened November 12, 1769, in Claverack. Nothing further is known of him. He is not mentioned in his father's will in 1816, so it is presumed that he died without issue prior to 1816. A John LOUP shows up in Ontario in 1789, but it could be Peter's brother John, born 1737, who also disappears, or it could be some other John altogether. Jenny LOOP [Peter(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)], the seventh and last child of Peter LOOP by his first wife Cousia SPRINGER was Jenny LOOP, as mentioned in Peter's will. She is probably the Jane LOOP who, according to ANDRUS family records, was born August 15, 1771 in Hillsdale, married Jonathan ANDRUS in 1786, and died on January 14, 1865. He was born May 8, 1763 and died March 17, 1837, and is buried in Harpur Cemetery, Colesville (south of Harpursville), NY. They were early settlers in Chemungtown [Chemung?], NY, where he kept a hotel or tavern and was a Justice of the Peace. They had children: Polly ANDRUS, Peggy ANDRUS, Robert ANDRUS, Edna ANDRUS, and Narcissus ANDRUS. Nathaniel LOOP [Peter(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)]. Peter LOOP married his second wife Maria BAILEY sometime before July 2, 1776, when their first child, Nathaniel LOOP, was christened in Hillsdale. We believe he removed to Canada with his brother Benjamin. Both Nathaniel and Benjamin disappear from U.S. records, and a Benjamin and a Nathaniel both show up in Hallowell, Prince Edward County, Ontario (not to be confused with Prince Edward Island). [see APR 91 LOOP SCOOP] Philyer LOOP [Peter(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)], was the second child of Peter LOOP and Maria BAILEY, born November 22, 1777 in Hillsdale. He moved to Alburg, Grand Isle County, Vermont in the late 1790's or early 1800's and probably there met and married, July 21, 1801, Martha (Patty) ODELL, whose parents, Joseph ODELL and Sally LEWIS, resided just across the border in Canada, in Odelltown, Quebec. She was born September 17, 1786. Philyer was a successful and wealthy merchant in Alburg. He owned a store that straddled the border between the United States and Canada. He was the state representative for Alburg in 1810 and a judge at least for the years 1814 and 1815. In 1819 and 1820 he was in partnership with Robert RANSOM in the firm of Loop & Ransom. In 1821 he formed a partnership with his son Joseph B. LOOP in the firm of Loop & Son. In 1822, Philyer was the richest man in Alburg. At the time of his death he owned 1000 acres of land in Canada. The family was probably hit by tuberculosis. All but two of his ten children died in their late teens or twenties. He and his wife also succumbed early, he on April 21, 1822, and she on September 13, 1823. They and most of the family are buried in the Bush Cemetery in Alburg. The children of Philyer LOOP and Martha (Patty) ODELL were: + 1. Joseph B. LOOP, b. July 18, 1802, in Alburg, Grand Isle County, VT, m. Letitia MOTT. She was born about 1802. He d. April 10, 1824. She then married George AMES. Joseph B. LOOP and Letitia are both buried in Bush Cemetery, Alburg, Grand Isle County, VT. 2. Sally M. LOOP, b. May 7, 1804, in Alburg, Grand Isle County, VT, m. William Lewis SOWLES. He was b. about 1800. She d. May 16, 1827, and is buried in Bush Cemetery, Alburg, Grand Isle County, VT. He d. in 1878. On her tombstone she is listed as the "consort of Col. Wm L. Sowles". + 3. Augustus P. LOOP, b. January 10, 1806, in Alburg, Grand Isle County, VT, m. Phebe HILL. She was b. 1808. He d. February 17, 1834, and is buried in Bush Cemetery, Alburg, Grand Isle County, VT. She d. 1837. 4. Alanson D. LOOP, b. December 20, 1807, in Alburg, Grand Isle County, VT, m. Sylvia, surname unknown. He d. August 18, 1830, and is buried in Bush Cemetery, Alburg, Grand Isle County, VT. 5. Louisa Marie LOOP, b. May 27, 1810, in Alburg, Grand Isle County, VT, m. William H. LYMAN in Alburg. He was b. 1802, in Vergennes, Addison County, VT. She d. August 16, 1827. He d. in 1864. Both are buried in Bush Cemetery, Alburg, Grand Isle County, VT. 6. Almira E. LOOP, b. December 17, 1812, in Alburg, Grand Isle County, VT, d. November 5, 1830, and is buried in Bush Cemetery, Alburg, Grand Isle County, VT. 7. William Henry Webster LOOP, b. March 20, 1815, in Alburg, Grand Isle County, VT, m. 1836, Catherine R. GAUL of Hillsdale, Columbia County, NY. She was born in Hudson, Columbia County, NY, about December, 1815. They were living in Hudson in the 1850 census. She d. January 24, 1861, of dropsy, and is buried in the Hudson Cemetery, Hudson, Columbia County, NY. He appears in the 1871 directory of Hudson as a bookkeepper boarding at Hudson House in Franklin Square. 8. Melissa A. LOOP, b. September 23, 1816, in Alburg, Grand Isle County, VT, m. September 10, 1837, James H. GAUL in Hudson, Columbia County, NY. She d. January 31, 1839. + 9. Philyer L. LOOP, b. July 8, 1819, in Alburg, Grand Isle County, VT, m. Asenath R. SOWLES. She was b. October 17, 1818, in Alburg, Grand Isle County, VT, the daughter of David SOWLES and Jemima SOLOMON. He d. October 1, 1846, in Portland, Ionia County, MI. She then married Oliver James DARBY. She and her second husband are buried together in Bush Cemetery, Alburg, Grand Isle County, VT. 10. Hiram L. LOOP, b. July 8, 1821, in Alburg, Grand Isle County, VT. He is censused in Hudson, Columbia County, NY, in 1850, living with his brother William. Henry A. LOOP [Peter(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)], the third child of Peter LOOP and his second wife Maria BAILEY. He was born June 10, 1779, and was christened the next month in Linlithgo, Columbia County, New York. Like his brother Philyer, Henry served as a judge. He was Justice of the Peace from 1815 to 1818 in Hillsdale. He also served as supervisor of the town in 1831 and 1832. His first wife, whom he married about 1803, was Louisa BUSHNELL born 1774, the daughter of Jesse BUSHNELL and Prudence MOREHOUSE (Prudence later became his father Peter LOOP's third wife). They had five children. She died September 6, 1829, and is buried in North Hillsdale. He married his second wife was Melinda McKINSTRY, daughter of Col. Charles McKINSTRY, on January 19, 1831, in Hillsdale, Columbia County, NY. She was b. June 12, 1794. Sometime after 1832 they moved to Great Barrington in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, not far from Hillsdale. There he died a widower on August 13, 1868 at age 91. He is at that time listed as a farmer. He is buried with his first wife in the Methodist Church churchyard, North Hillsdale, Columbia County, New York. The children of Judge Henry A. LOOP and his first wife Louisa BUSHNELL were: 1. Almeria LOOP, b. about 1802, m. November 19, 1824, Lee COLLIN. He was the son of David COLLIN and Lucy BINGHAM. 2. John G. LOOP, b. December 14, 1804, d. April 25, 1809, and is buried in North Hillsdale, Columbia County, NY. + 3. George Henry LOOP, b. February 9, 1809, m. Angelica DOWNING. She was the daughter of Silas DOWNING, probably by his wife Peggy. George Henry LOOP d. in 1891 perhaps in Saratoga County, NY, but is buried in North Hillsdale, Columbia County, NY, with his wife, who d. in 1897. + 4. Augustine Bushnell LOOP, b. about 1812, in Hillsdale, Columbia County, NY, m. October 27, 1841, Mary Valonia ROBBINS. He d. about 1872 in St. Joseph, Buchanan County, MO. + 5. John Philyer LOOP, b. September 25, 1816, m. July 1, 1840, Emiline Matilda DAVIS. He d. July 24, 1882, in Syracuse, Onondaga County, NY. The child of Judge Henry A. LOOP and his second wife Melinda McKINSTRY was: 6. Charles Norton LOOP. He was a merchant in New York State. Benjamin LOOP [Peter(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)], the last child of Peter LOOP and Maria BAILEY was Benjamin LOOP. He was born February 28, 1783, and christened June 8, 1783 at Linlithgo, Columbia County, New York. We believe he removed to Ontario and settled in Hallowell and married Agnes KENNEDY, possibly a daughter of Hugh Kennedy who lived in Hallowel. They had 11 children. They removed to Essex County, Ontario, not far from Detroit, where they lived many years. They later removed to Flint, Michigan, where she died on February 15, 1860, and he died on January 19, 1865. The information on Benjamin's tombstone conflicts with the known birthdate of Peter's son Benjamin, but a Michigan census record for the same Benjamin yields a year of birth the same as Peter's son Benjamin. I suspect, as is frequently the case, that the tombstone inscription is in error. Newspaper article sent to me by one you [who?] from what appears to be a Burlington, Vermont, Newspaper: Old Home Plays Both Sides of Line, by Eloise Hedbor. Alburg - The house that Philyer Loop built sits silent and deserted. Weathered boards cover its first-floor windows. A stone marker stands in what was once its front lawn. Across the road is the U.S. border station. The marker is the international border. The border runs right through the house. It's not the only Vermont building to straddle the border. Derby line boasts at least four houses that do so, said Richard Albergini, village trustee. Even the village library is in both Vermont and Canada. But as far as locals know, the Alburg house is the only structure built intentionally astride the border. Apparently only Loop saw the commercial benefits of border straddling. And he would have had good reasons for building astride the international border, said Pauline Tubbs, a longtime Alburg resident. Loop had extensive business interests on both sides of the line. He and Robert Ransom co-owned a store in Alburg, near his house. On the border's north side, Loop had another store, in partnership with his son, Joseph. A local historian's research revealed Loop owned 657 acres in Alburg and 1000 acres or more in Canada, Tubbs said. His home was his international base of operations. Now delapitated, the house used to be one of the grandest homes in the area. It was built in the early 1800s. The Webster-Ashburton treaty set the current border in 1842. Loop came to Alburg from Hillsdale, N.Y., in about 1800. Then 23 years old, he became active in town affairs. He was elected to the Vermont House of Representatives in 1810. He served as chief judge of the Grand Isle County Court from 1814 to 1815. On May 19, 1817, he was appointed postmaster. Sometime during this period, he built the house. It boasted 10 rooms and a huge fireplace, with all the "gadgets," Tubbs said. Today, the exterior lines remain beautifully classic, and the ornate cornice gives mute testimony to its former elegance. Loop died young, in 1822, followed just a year later by his wife, Martha. After his death came what Tubbs said was a "long, drawn out litigation" over the estate, which was valued at $27,944, "a vast amount for the times." Eventually, the homestead went to Louisa Loop who in 1826, at the age of 16, married William Lyman from Vergennes. The house underwent many changes during the following decades. At one time there was a tannery behind it. It also was a tavern or inn and had been a sawmill. Now, only the old house remains, a witness to past grandeur, and perhaps, to an astute trader who literally played both sides of the line. Betty Cheney of Swanton bought the place a few years ago. The boarded up windows are to keep out intruders. "It's sort of caved in inside" and dangerous to enter, she said. "The roof is straight as an arrow but not much else is." Cheney said she has no plans for the house. +++++++++++++++++++++++ NOTES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS +++++++++++++++++++++++ 1. Cynthia Hupper - Did you receive the material I sent to you via your husband over the electronic network? If not, let me know. And thank you for your pedigree chart. I would love to receive any family group sheets you have for your earlier Loop's, for example, John Henry Loop who married Francelia Antoinette Rice. It's interesting that his son Frank Timothy Loope changed the spelling of the name. 2. Wardene Roush Weisser - Thank you for your letter and all the information. I believe the Thode document is in error and simply an earlier attempt to piece together a story from the same information we have now. I am very confident of my claim that John Roush, Grace Roush (that that was her maiden name is documented), and Catherine Roush's father, were all "adopted" by Christian Loop and were probably children of his wife by her first husband. The Elizabeth Rausch buried beside John is indeed his wife, but was not Elizabeth "Loop", but had some other maiden name. Any other explanation cannot easily account for Christian calling Grace (Roush) Felkey his daughter. I also disagree with the middle initial "V" for John Roush. I have a photo of his tombstone (and visited the site myself), and what might appear to be a "V" is clearly, upon careful examination, merely the fancy tail of the "N" in "JOHN". That John Roush and his wife Elizabeth were in Westmoreland County in 1800 is likely as Christian was there in 1790. And so I have assumed that they are the John and Elizabeth Roush in the church records giving birth to Elizabeth Rauch, May 10, 1800, in Mt. Pleasant. I could be wrong. Could she not be the Eliza ROUSH listed by you as Martin John ROUSH's sister? No one has yet been able to determine who Christian LOOP's parents were. There is a lot of bad information out there. There is no "Dr." Christian LOOP. The Christian LOOP who died in New Jersey in 1763 was born in Germany in 1724 and is the one who arrived in Philadelphia in 1751. The Christian LOOP who was born in Germany in 1695 and married Anna Maria FILGER, arrived in New York City in 1737 and died probably in Columbia County, NY. I do not know what to tell you concerning what family to research to find your Christian. I've run out of candidates. Trying to answer that question has been one of my chief frustrations.
